The Eternal Companion: Rekindling My Relationship with the Qur’an

Friday, January 19th, 2024 | 8:11 am

Every year, we watch people come and go. Some are with us for a season, some are with us for a reason, but not everyone stays. Yet, there is one who remains—constant, unwavering, ever-present. The Qur’an. No matter the trials, the changes, or the people that enter and exit our lives, the Qur’an stays with us until the end. It will be there when no one else will, when the voices around us fade away, and when our loved ones can no longer provide solace.

I sit in quiet reflection and realize: I have no excuse to not strengthen my relationship with you, O’ Qur’an. For how many years have I taken you for granted, letting the pages collect dust, letting our bond weaken in the face of the world’s distractions? I confess, I have let time slip away. Yet you—the eternal Word of Allah—have never left me. You have been my guide, my comfort, my teacher, even when I failed to be there for you.

“Don’t wait until the pages turn blank…”

These words echo in my heart like a whisper of regret. The Qur’an speaks to us in ways we often fail to hear, but it is never too late to rekindle the connection. Allah reminds us of the importance of the Qur’an in His Words: “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah” (Qur’an 2:2). It is not just a book, it is the path to salvation. It is the guide for the soul, the healer of hearts, the clarifier of thoughts, and the illuminator of our lives.

And how could I neglect the Qur’an when Allah Himself has praised it so highly? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih Bukhari). These words challenge me. They challenge my complacency and remind me that the Qur’an should be the dearest companion in my life—more cherished than any friend, more faithful than any relative.

I often think of the moment when I will stand before Allah on the Day of Judgment. Will the Qur’an be a witness for me or against me? The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The Qur’an will either intercede for you or against you on the Day of Judgment.” (Sahih Muslim). How often do I sit with the Qur’an? How often do I reflect on its meanings, seek its guidance, and strive to implement its wisdom? This book, this gift from Allah, is not meant to be a mere decoration on the shelf or a symbol of piety when opened in front of others. It is meant to be lived.

“Don’t wait until the pages turn blank…”

These words resonate deeply, reminding me that life is fleeting. If I do not cherish the Qur’an now, then when will I? We are reminded in the Qur’an itself: “And the Messenger has said, ‘O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’an as a thing abandoned.’” (Qur’an 25:30). It is a heart-wrenching reminder from the Prophet (ﷺ) about the fate of those who abandon the Qur’an. When we abandon it, we abandon the light that guides us, the comfort that heals us, and the wisdom that saves us.

As I reflect on the years that have passed, I feel a deep sense of urgency. I cannot afford to delay. I must befriend the Qur’an again—not as a mere task, but as a relationship that demands my heart, my time, and my effort. The Qur’an is not simply a book of words; it is the living Word of Allah, meant to transform my life. It is meant to be a companion that walks with me through every trial, offering solace when the world is harsh, offering clarity when I am lost.

I know that I cannot do this alone. But the Qur’an is not just for the pious or the learned. It is for everyone who seeks Allah’s mercy, guidance, and forgiveness. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Qur’an is an intercessor, and its intercession is accepted.” (Sahih Muslim). The Qur’an will speak on our behalf if we allow it to, if we nurture it within our hearts. And when I feel lost or weak, I remind myself that the Qur’an is there to lift me up, to remind me of my purpose, to bring me back to the Straight Path.

“Don’t wait until the pages turn blank…”

I will not let that happen. I will turn to you, O’ Qur’an, with sincerity and love. I will seek your guidance every day, reflecting on your verses, living by your teachings, and making you the central part of my life. For you are not just a book; you are my companion in this life and the next. And when the final Day comes, when no one else will be there to speak for me, I know you will be there. You will be my voice.

O Allah, make the Qur’an the light of our hearts, the balm for our souls, and the guide that leads us to Your mercy. Ameen.

“And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy to remember, so is there anyone who will be mindful?” (Qur’an 54:40). May we all be among those who remember, reflect, and live by the Qur’an.
