The Difference: A Poem, A Prayer, A Journey of Seeking

Monday, December 19th, 2022 | 10:10 am

I memorized this poem, The Difference by Alan Grant, at an early age—simply because I loved it. Something about its rhythm, its message, its quiet depth captivated me even as a child.

Looking back, I realize it must have meant something special to my parents as well. Though we weren’t a particularly religious family, they had this poem framed as a wall decoration in our home. A simple yet profound reminder, always present but never forced upon us.

Now, as a Muslim, every time this poem comes to mind, I find that it still rings true—perhaps even more so. Its words, once familiar for reasons I couldn’t fully grasp as a child, now carry an even deeper weight in my heart.

And so, I want to share it with my brothers and sisters in faith, in hopes that they too might find something within it to reflect on—particularly about Salah and Dua.

The part that has always resonated with me the most speaks about “the Keys.”

That line stayed with me through the years. Even now, it still makes me pause and reflect.

Have you tried them all?

Have you sought the right one?

Because prayer is not just about asking—it is about seeking, knocking, and using the keys Allah has given us to unlock the doors of His mercy.

Some of these keys are simple, yet powerful. And sometimes, we overlook them in our rush to find solutions elsewhere.

May we all use them wisely, and may Allah open the doors we seek, in ways far better than we ever imagined.
