The Humble Path of Dawah: Small Actions, Big Impact

Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 | 8:19 am

Dawah, the act of inviting others to Islam, is an integral part of the Muslim journey, not just for those who wish to actively preach, but for everyone. You don’t need to stand on a street corner debating or delivering a formal lecture to be involved in dawah. Sometimes, it’s the smallest actions that speak the loudest.

Engaging in dawah serves as a constant reminder to check in with your own understanding of Islam. It humbles you. It reminds you that no matter how much we think we know, there is always more to learn. There’s always a deeper layer to uncover. When you are asked about something you aren’t sure about, trust me… that feeling of uncertainty will nudge you to dig deeper, to seek the truth. It compels you to turn to the Qur’an, to ask Allah for guidance, and to strengthen your own foundation in the faith. And in doing so, you grow closer to Him.

But dawah isn’t always about grand gestures or public speeches. It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming, large-scale event. It can be as simple as embodying the essence of Islam in your daily life. Smile at others—it’s a form of charity, after all. Manifest your identity as a Muslim or Muslimah through your actions, by practicing the Sunnah, by showing kindness, patience, and respect. Every act, no matter how small, sends a message. Every moment is an opportunity to showcase the beauty of our faith without saying a word.

Don’t be disheartened when people label you as “suddenly so religious,” or tease you with names like “brother sheikh” or “sister sheikha.” Let it pass. Remember, these comments often stem from their own misunderstandings, and the best response is often to keep doing what you’re doing, for the sake of Allah. Things done purely for Him are always beneficial. They are never wasted. More importantly, they elevate your practice from the bare minimum of simply being a Muslim to actively seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The truth is, when you step forward with good intentions, when you make that conscious effort to engage in dawah, Allah opens doors of knowledge for you. I truly believe this. You may not see it immediately, but taking that first step is crucial. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever takes one step toward Allah, Allah will run toward him.” [Sahih Muslim]

By taking that initiative, whether it’s through a simple smile, a helping hand, or seeking knowledge to answer questions about your faith, you are on a path that will bring you closer to Allah. You don’t need to have all the answers right away. What matters is your sincerity, your willingness to grow, and your desire to share the truth of Islam with others in whatever way you can.

If you’re serious about pursuing dawah more actively, there are plenty of avenues to grow in knowledge and skills. I recommend exploring resources like MopAcademy.org, where you can find training, seminars, and free Zoom classes. The journey of increasing in knowledge is just as humbling as the act of dawah itself, if not more. Through seeking knowledge, you not only help others, but you also help yourself grow and become stronger in your faith.

The more you learn, the more you realize how little you truly know. And yet, that is the beauty of it. It is a never-ending journey of discovery. As you step forward in dawah, remember that the path of knowledge is one that requires patience, humility, and a willingness to keep seeking the truth, no matter how challenging it may be.

So, take that first step—whatever it may look like for you—and trust that Allah will guide you, open doors for you, and increase your understanding of this beautiful deen.
